In the field of psychology, therapies play a very important role. Each methodology and technique brings these approaches a unique perspective and technique. There are a few important counselling approaches which are defined below:-
COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY
Cognitive-behavioural therapy, mostly known as CBT, is a widely practised and evidence-based therapeutic approach. It functions on the premise that our feelings, thoughts and behaviours are interconnected, influencing each other in a continuous loop. It aims to identify and challenge irrational thought patterns and behaviour, indulging a positive change in emotions and actions.
CBT is a goal-oriented and short-term approach. It is very particular and effective for addressing specific issues like anxiety, depression and phobias. Counsellors use CBT with individuals willing to work on themselves and by helping them recognize and modify harmful cognitive patterns, empowering individuals to develop healthy coping mechanisms.
PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPY
Psychodynamics was given by Sigmund Freud and it explores the unconscious mind and its impact on our thoughts and behaviours. This approach focuses on the understanding of how past experiences that have roots in childhood can shape or modify current emotions, behaviour and interpersonal relationships.
In psychodynamic therapy, the therapeutic relationship plays an important role. Individuals are encouraged to explore their unconscious thoughts and emotions which uncovers the hidden aspects of their behaviour. The counsellor plays the role of a guide, helping the individual gain insight into unresolved conflicts and allowing you to understand your emotions deeply.
It is a long-term approach compared to CBT provides an in-depth exploration of underlying issues and makes it suitable for individuals to seek self-awareness and personal growth.
RATIONAL EMOTIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY (REBT)
REBT was given by Albert Ellis. It is a short-term therapy which is goal-oriented psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and challenging irrational beliefs and thought patterns that cause emotional distress and unhealthy behaviour.
REBT helps you develop rational thinking and leads you to adapt more emotions and behaviours. This therapy helps you in modifying your emotions and behaviours to achieve your desired goals in life.
It is believed that individuals perceive and interpret events significantly which influences their emotional responses and actions. REBT helps you cope with them and the life challenges that occur with irrational thoughts and emotions.
HUMANISTIC THERAPY
Humanistic therapy is a person-centred therapy developed by Carl Rogers. It emphasises internal capacity, self-actualisation and personal growth. This therapy believes that by providing a supportive and empathetic environment, an individual can achieve anything they want.
Counsellors give importance to the present moment, self-exploration and self-acceptance. It centres around the core conditions of the individual and helps them by providing them with empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence and creating a herd environment where they feel heard, accepted and understood.
Understanding that the counselling needs different counselling therapies, these empower individuals to make informed choices on their journey towards mental and emotional well-being.
